Handmade Wooden Frames — Milan

I make the frames for my own photographs by hand, in my workshop in Milan. What began as a practical problem — finding frames that did not compete with the image — became a second craft.

Every frame starts from solid hardwood, chosen board by board for grain and colour. I cut, join and finish each one myself, then finish the surface with oil, wax or paint, which leaves the wood matte and open to the touch.

The proportions follow the photograph, not the wall. I size the moulding and the mat so that the frame holds the image without framing it in the decorative sense. My photographs are printed on fine art paper, and the frame is the last step of that same process.

Each frame is made one at a time.
